Reticulitermes Flavipes (Eastern Subterranean Termites)

Trinidad and Tobago, along with the wider Caribbean and North America, are known for experiencing events that cause significant structural damage. They build their colonies underground and create mud trails to access food sources, like wood, without being exposed to air. A single colony can house hundreds of thousands of termites, making them formidable pests. Key characteristics:

  • Colony size: Up to 400,000 to 600,000 termites.
  • Damage rate: moderate to high if left untreated by qualified Pest Control Operators.
  • Signs of infestation: Mud trails and termite dropping on floor or in cupboard and cabinets.

Prevention Tip:
Keep wood debris away from your home, fix leaks, and ensure good drainage to deter these moisture-loving pests!

Formosan Termites (Copotermes Formosanus)

Known as one of the most aggressive and destructive termite species, Formosan termites are sometimes called the “super termites” due to their large colonies and fast eating habits. Native to Asia, they have spread across the southern U.S. and thrive in warm, humid climates. Key characteristics:

  • Colony size: Over a million termites.
  • Damage rate: Rapid; they can cause severe damage in a short time.

Signs of infestation:
Swarms of winged termites, large mud nests, damaged wood with honeycomb patterns, and their remarkable ability to construct free-standing trails independent of walls or other supports are all characteristic traits. These termites can also build their tube tracks vertically without needing surrounding support and travel through layers of shelving, moving up or down as if suspended in the air.

Prevention Tip: Seal all cracks in your home’s foundation and keep landscaping well-maintained to limit moisture and entry points.

Rats & Mice

Rodents cause massive damage to local households, farms, and businesses. They constantly search for food and shelter, often moving indoors when heavy rains flood their nests, or when nearby bush fires and construction projects drive them out. Beyond chewing through electrical wires and walls, they ruin food supplies with their waste and spread dangerous bacteria, causing dangerous diseases such as leptospirosis.

  • Prevention Tip: Lock away food in sturdy plastic, metal or glass bins, patch up holes around plumbing and doors, and use secure lids on all trash cans. Have your domestic waste disposed of frequently.

Ticks

These blood-sucking pests thrive in our warm, tropical climate and are a constant threat to pets and livestock. They hide in tall grass and can quickly take over kennels, yards, and living rooms. Aside from causing painful bites, a severe tick problem can make both you and your pets weak and sick from a series of bacterial and parasitic infections as well as toxins that cause allergic reactions and temporary paralysis.

  • Prevention Tip: Keep your lawn cut short, check your dogs regularly, wash pet bedding in hot water, and stop animals from roaming into thick bush.

Mosquitoes/Sand Flies

Mosquitoes are a major health threat locally because they carry viruses like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. They breed rapidly in the heat, especially during the rainy season. Any bit of trapped water can become a breeding ground within days as mosquitos’ eggs can last for as long as a year in dry conditions.

  • Prevention Tip: Check your yard weekly to tip out standing water from old tires, flower pots, and drums. Keep your guttering clean and fit mesh screens on windows. Change vase water and wash vase every two weeks, store water in sealed containers.
